Freesat - Why TV Is Better At Christmas

Why TV Is Better At Christmas

We all know there is just something that bit extra special about television during the festive season... but why? We've created a list of our favourite things about Christmas TV, uncovering what it is that makes it so magical...

1. The Christmas specials

The holiday season always promises an abundance of feel-good Christmas specials, because the only thing better than an episode of your favourite show is a festive episode of your favourite show!

And this year there are some seriously sleigh-mazing specials to look forward to on Freesat. From BBC One's Strictly to Channel 4's Bake Off, you'll be able to enjoy some of 2019's best offerings all over again, but this time with a touch of Christmas spirit added into the mix. Plus, you won't want to miss the Gavin & Stacey Christmas Special everyone has been talking about! After parting ways with the beloved series nine years ago, fans will be reunited with the Shipman and West families on BBC One for a one-off special on Christmas Day.

2. Those Christmas films that never get old...

You've seen it a million times already, but watching It's A Wonderful Life or Home Alone every December just never gets old, does it? Classic Christmas movies never seem to lose their magic and we're more than happy to have an excuse to watch them every year.

And with so many fantastic channels on offer on Freesat, you'll be spoilt for choice! Keep an eye on our dedicated films channels this festive season, including Film4, Sony Movies, Talking Pictures TV, Retro Movies and - non-stop Christmas movies destination - Sony Movies Christmas!

P.S. If you're after some movie recommendations, take a look at our films page to see the very best picks on telly each week.

3. A chance for family time

The kids are running riot, half the family are busy in the kitchen and Nan's having her midday snooze on the sofa, but when that family favourite film, Christmas special or brand new drama comes on, everyone huddles round the screen to share in the moment.

TV brings the family together. And at Christmas time, there are plenty of things on to entertain both you and the little ones. For instance, take a look at all the magical animations coming up here!

4. Nostalgic episodes

Christmas is a time for reflection. And what better way to revel in the good old days than curling up in front of the TV and watching nostalgic reruns of those iconic classic shows, that still manage to stand the test of time. The TV schedules are always packed full of old favourites around Christmas, including Morecambe and Wise, The Two Ronnies, Blackadder and Dad's Army; episodes guaranteed to give you that warm, fuzzy feeling as you reminisce of days gone by...

5. Brand new, quality drama

And last but not least, the stand-out thing about Christmas telly has to be all the incredible new drama on offer. With more people off work for the holidays, there will naturally be more eyes glued to the TV, which means it's the perfect time for the big channels to launch quality drama.

This year, we cannot wait to see BBC shows A Christmas Carol, Worzel Gummidge and Martin's Close!
