Your mini guide to the FIFA World Cup 2022

Get ready for a full month of footie as the FIFA World Cup hits our screens at long last!

Hosted in Qatar in winter rather than the usual summer to avoid the scorching heat Qatar sees in the summer, Qatar and Ecuador will kick off the prestigious football tournament on BBC.

The 2022 World Cup kicks off on Sunday 20th November, with the final taking place on Sunday 18th December. There will be a whopping 31 live games to watch, with the matches split between BBC, ITV and STV channels until the final, which will air on both BBC, ITV and STV.

When are England and Wales playing in the World Cup 2022?

Anyone hoping for England to be put in a favourable group this year is out of luck – we've been put in Group B, which has the highest average FIFA ranking of all the groups. That said, we’re the highest-ranked and only past World Cup winners in the group, so there’s still a chance of Gareth’s lads bringing it home for us.

While Scotland didn’t make the running, Wales also made the cup and has also been placed in Group B. In fact, on Tuesday 29th November the two home nations will be going head-to-head.

Here are the England and Wales matches you won't want to miss:

  • England v Iran, Monday 21st November, 1pm, BBC

  • Wales vs USA, Monday 21st November, 7pm, ITV + STV

  • Wales vs Iran, Friday 25th November, 10am, BBC

  • England vs USA, Friday 25th November, 7pm, ITV+ STV

  • England vs Wales, Tuesday 29th November, 7pm, BBC

Who will win the World Cup 2022?

image of two football players feet kicking a football

It’s a no-brainer that all the England and Wales matches are a must-see, with England boasting Harry Kane and Wales with Gareth Bale.

Germany is also always one to watch with their new manager Hansi Flick building what looks like a solid and promising team.

France have Kylian Mbappé and Karim Benzema who are sure to make a splash, while Argentina of course has Messi, who is always a force to be reckoned with.

As well as these tried and tested football stars, there’s also a line-up of exciting new players entering the field, so the trophy is still very much up for grabs with the world’s best football players heading to Qatar.
