All Is True (2018)
Wednesday 10th December, BBC Two at 11pm
When the world’s most famous playwright finally packs up his quill and heads home, life in Stratford turns out to be far messier than any of his tragedies. Kenneth Branagh slips into the role of an ageing, slightly weary Shakespeare trying to make peace with his family, his legacy and a few long-buried secrets. A gentle, thoughtful drama laced with warmth, wit and beautiful period detail. Stage and screen heavyweights Judi Dench and Ian McKellen chew up the scenery in supporting roles.
Boston Strangler (2023)
Thursday 11th December, Film4 at 9pm
A city shaken by a series of brutal murders becomes the backdrop for two intrepid reporters who won’t be pushed aside. Keira Knightley and Carrie Coon take the lead as sharp, relentless journalists fighting newsroom sceptics, police stonewalling and a killer who seems to stay one step ahead. A tense, atmospheric thriller packed with smoky newsrooms, late-night leads and the unsettling realisation that the truth is far murkier - and far more dangerous - than anyone expected.
The Proposal (2009)
Friday 12th December, BBC One at 11:30pm
With rom-com season firmly in swing, it’s high time to revisit The Proposal, the cheeky crowd-pleaser that made everyone briefly consider marrying their boss. This cracker of a comedy stars Sandra Bullock as Maggie Tate, a fearsome New York book editor whose idea of team bonding is not firing you. When she’s threatened with deportation back to Canada, she strong-arms her long-suffering assistant Andrew (Ryan Reynolds) into a sham engagement. Cue a trip to small-town Alaska, an eccentric family welcome, and a whole lot of “how on earth did we get here?” antics. It’s fizzy, funny, and packed with charm, a rom-com that knows exactly what it is and has a blast doing it. Enjoy screen icon Betty White in a scene-stealing supporting role!
The Batman (2022)
Saturday 13th December, ITV1 at 10:25pm
Gotham is drowning in rain, corruption and a string of cryptic murders, which means it’s the perfect moment for a brooding young vigilante to step out of the shadows. Robert Pattinson takes the cowl as a raw, relentless Batman, stalking through grime-soaked streets while trying to stay one step ahead of a taunting Riddler (Paul Dano) who leaves clues no one wants to solve. What follows is a moody, slow-burn detective tale stuffed with dodgy politicians, wary cops and a city that feels like it might collapse under its own secrets. It’s gripping, stylish and properly atmospheric, a superhero film that leans into noir grit rather than glossy spectacle.
The Holiday (2006)
Sunday 14th December, BBC Two at 8:30pm
With Christmas creeping ever closer, The Holiday is calling out for another cosy watch and making us all wonder if it’s too late to book a December getaway! This warm and fuzzy gem pairs Cameron Diaz with Jude Law, as her LA power-player Amanda lands in a Surrey cottage and promptly meets his disarmingly charming local dad routine. Meanwhile, Kate Winslet’s Iris escapes to Amanda’s glossy Hollywood pad and finds comfort, friendship and a spark of romance she didn’t see coming. It’s charming, funny and delightfully self-aware - a festive hug of a film that has become an enduring Christmas classic.
The Menu (2022)
Monday 15th December, Film4 at 9pm
On a remote private island, The Menu serves up a wickedly sharp foodie nightmare, led by a cast who know exactly how to keep you on edge. Anya Taylor-Joy plays Margot, a diner who’s far too savvy to be impressed by fancy foams, while Nicholas Hoult is her terminally starstruck date, desperate to please. Presiding over the whole bizarre evening is Ralph Fiennes as the world’s most terrifying chef, a man whose tasting menu has far more bite than anyone expects. What follows is tense, stylish and darkly funny, a culinary satire that skewers pretension and keeps you guessing right up to a truly unforgettable final course.
Scandal (1989)
Tuesday 16th December, Talking Pictures TV at 9:10pm
Set against the smoky intrigue of 1960s London, Scandal dives into the infamous Profumo affair with a cast who make the chaos irresistible to watch. Joanne Whalley stars as Christine Keeler, the young model whose entanglement with powerful men sends Westminster into meltdown, while John Hurt brings a magnetic mix of charm and danger to Dr Stephen Ward, the society fixer who pulls too many strings for his own good. Ian McKellen appears as John Profumo himself - the cabinet minister whose downfall becomes headline gold. The result is sharp, stylish and utterly gripping, a political drama that sizzles with glamour, ambition and the price of getting too close to the fire.
Live Free or Die Hard (2007)
Wednesday 17th December, ITV1 at 11:25pm
In a world where cybercriminals can bring an entire country to its knees, Live Free or Die Hard throws Bruce Willis back into the fray as John McClane, the grizzled cop who’s allergic to doing things the easy way. This time he’s reluctantly teamed up with Justin Long as Matt Farrell, a nervy hacker who suddenly finds himself very high on the wrong hit list. Looming over the chaos is Timothy Olyphant as a cool, calculating villain determined to shut the system down and watch the fallout. Enjoy the wild ride of this loud, slick and unapologetically over-the-top action romp where McClane proves he’s still the bloke you call when everything goes catastrophically wrong.
Mrs Harris Goes to Paris (2022)
Thursday 18th December, Film4 at 9:05pm
An unassuming London charwoman with big dreams sets off for the ‘City of Lights’, armed with kindness, stubborn grit and a fiver saved here and there. Lesley Manville shines as Ada Harris, a widow who falls head over heels for a Dior dress and decides she’s not just going to admire beauty, she’s going to chase it. A warm, sparkling adventure full of couture workshops, clattering teacups and the quiet thrill of proving that ordinary life can still lead somewhere extraordinary.
